Please feel free to get in touch with me if you’re interested in learning to play the fiddle or learning more about the music. I teach lessons to people of all ages—from people who have never picked up an instrument before to experienced violinists who want to explore Irish music.

I learned to play by ear, and I generally teach by ear without the use of sheetmusic. I record all lesson tunes and email them or burn them to CDs so that you can take them home to practice.

I also encourage people to listen to as much music as possible.  Listening to tunes not only helps train your ear, it introduces you to new musical ideas and develops your taste. (And of course, it gives you something to talk about when you hang out with other musicians!)  I spend time during lessons introducing students to recordings of different fiddle styles, and I provide a “discography” of albums to buy or borrow.

Lessons are generally one hour long.  I teach at my house in Portland.  I also have some connections to the midcoast area and could offer lessons up there given enough interest.
